Captain's Report - 2006/07

First of all, congratulations to Iain Embrey. He has just been selected to the Great Britain team to compete at the Junior World Championships to be held in July in Australia! Initially Iain was reserve but another athlete was forced to withdraw through injury, leaving Iain with a chance to compete against the best junior orienteers in the world.

Iain was selected after some amazing performances in the Future Champions Cup this season. This series of seven races held from the end of February to end of April ended in a final weekend of two races at the start of term. Both Iain and I had qualified. In the first race (short/middle distance) Iain finished 5 seconds down on the leader in second place. The long distance race was the next day, Iain's season has been decimated by injury and illness (he only just qualified for this final, by limping round the 3km British Sprint Champs final in 86 minutes, the next slowest time was 22 minutes!) and his fitness may have suffered as he had a disappointing result in this race, which probably cost him immediate selection to the JWOC team of 6 men. I finished in 10th place over the weekend, reasonably satisfied, and Warwick was awarded 3rd in the university club competition for the second year in a row.

The club has visited almost all of the major domestic races this year, such as the JK, the British Champs (with members competing at Elite level in all three distances). Notable individual performances at the JK came from EWOKs Graham Gristwood (3rd M21E, though he won't be that happy) and James Wickens (2nd M21V), with Warwick student Shimona Starling taking first place in W21V. I won silver in M20E at the British Long Champs. Ben, Harold, Mark and Rob have all run at a major domestic race this season, they really are for anyone and are excellent fun.

As a club we did very well at BUSA this year, given a big boost from our Swedish visitor Linus Kaisajunnti. Then men's team came 3rd overall, and we were so close to a relay medal. I'd like to say lets make an improvement next year but we might be struggling, we really need more women so if anyone is reading this has been thinking about becoming more active in the club then please do! Also, we came last in the Beer/Boat Race, again, even being beaten by Birmingham. Social Sec Rob take note, this must not be allowed to happen again!

Linus has also got UWOC on the famous Flying Pig Trophy from winning the annual JOK Chasing Sprint. I wonder if WarwickSport would like it in the trophy cabinet...

Good luck to all graduates entering the world of work, keep up orienteering make sure you join EWOK (and send us a non-Warwick email address before the end of term please). To any graduates moving on to another University, if you join EUOC, ShUOC or BUOC you shall be forever cursed.

The end of two years of Presidency from Miss. Northall, bring forth the era of the Cummings.

Matt Rooke - Captain 2006/07
